Comparsion of Linux distributions (Week 13)

Ubuntu vs CentOS

Ubuntu is based on an open source operating system. It is also called a Linux distribution based on the Debian architecture. It has three editions: Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu Core. It is the most popular operating system for the cloud and is used as the preferred operating system for Open Stack. It comes with a lot of applications, with more than a thousand applications available in the Ubuntu software center, and its operating system is highly customizable and has top security features. CentOS is also known as the Community Enterprise Operating System. CentOS is mainly used by businesses and developers who do not need to frequently update and install the application, which makes it more stable and secure. It's open source. This makes the process a quick and direct way to install software. [1]

What do CentOS and Ubuntu have in common?

When it comes to comparing Centos and Ubuntu, the first thing to note is that both systems are completely free. They can be freely downloaded on the Internet and installed on your server. These two operating systems are universal solutions and can be used to host almost any projects and applications.

But still, the differences between these systems are much more than common. Therefore, we will focus on the distinctive characteristics in the process of choosing centos or ubuntu for the server. [1]

What is the difference between CentOS and Ubuntu?

  • CentOS is based on the Linux platform and Linux distribution to implement a free, community-supported computing platform that is compatible with the corresponding Red Hat Linux source code, while Ubuntu is an open source Linux distribution based on Debian.
  • In terms of system stability, CentOS is a more stable distribution than Ubuntu.
  • Ubuntu provides more extensive and extensive community support than CentOS
  • In terms of learning, Ubuntu has a lot of tutorials and various extensive documentation for basic knowledge purposes, whereas in the case of CentOS, due to the relatively small community and less documentation support, it becomes a bit more difficult to move up the learning curve.
  • In the case of CentOS, the yum command can be used to download RPM packages from the library as well, while in the case of Ubuntu, DEB packages can be downloaded using the apt-get package manager [2]
After comparing CentOS with Ubuntu on a number of factors, it can be concluded that CentOS and Ubuntu are the two main operating systems when setting up web servers for application development. So, based on the type of project needs, the time of work, and all other aspects discussed, either of these two should be chosen to achieve the desired goal.
